Ben Ekstrom, MD, FAAP

Dr. Ben Ekstrom grew up in Anchorage and graduated from Dimond High School. He subsequently spent 15 years out of state, gaining valuable skills and experience at some of the best training programs in the nation, so that he could better serve his patients. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his residency training in anesthesiology at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He completed two clinical fellowships through Harvard Medical School to receive additional qualifications in Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pain Management for children and adults. He is the first pain management physician in the state of Alaska who specializes in treating children with painful diseases.

His philosophy for patient care is to treat patients one at a time and to treat them like family. Having trained in international referral centers for pain management, he is prepared to treat the most difficult pain syndromes in patients of all ages. In addition to medical treatment of pain, he has expertise in the entire spectrum of interventional pain procedures. He employs a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to pain management, recognizing that chronic pain has impact on all aspects of the lives of patients and their families.

Dr. Ben is an avid outdoorsman and he enjoys hunting, fishing, backpacking, and cross-country skiing. He has hiked many peaks in Southcentral Alaska. His wife, Sarah, was also raised in Alaska and was born here. They are thrilled to raise their children in their home state and help them experience the beauty and natural wonders of Alaska!
